Different aspects of the first gravitational-wave direct detection

  • Abstract:

On September 14th 2015 a gravitational-wave, emitted by the coalescence of a pair of black-holes, was detected directly for the first time by LIGO. The aim of this course is to present the different aspects of this discovery. Based on recent publications by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, we aim to provide answers to the following questions: what exactly was observed? what is the source? how we are sure that the source is of astrophysical origin? how does the LIGO detector work? what are the implications of this discovery for general relativity and astrophysics? what are the future prospects for this field?

This course is open to all students with an interest in this discovery. However, basic knowledge of General Relativity is required.

The courses will be delivered in English.
